Today is Martin Luther King’s birthday. It’s an important day for America… for many reasons.

It got me thinking about MLK and our country’s fragile state.

MLK obviously was a hero to the anti-racism movement, but he taught us much more.

One important thing he taught us was that non-violence was a strategy that worked. It worked because it resonated with the better part of all of us. He taught us it was OK to be angry but that anger didn’t have to turn into violence.

Back in the late 60’s , protesting for African Americans’ civil rights was widespread and dangerous. If you were in the US South, it was truly deadly dangerous, especially if you were a troublemaker from the North.

On MLK Day in Nashville TN, I was making my first remark ever to some ordinary southerners about Rev. King’s birthday.  I said something to the effect of “Hey it’s a special day of joy. I was shocked when one worker responded that he was glad that James Earl Ray killed Martin.  I was shocked speechless when they all grunted encouraging hateful responses.  It was crystal clear how they felt.

Plus MLK has inspired many musicians to do great things. Here is a song I recorded yesterday with my little iPhone. It is straightforward all about protesting but today.

Yours in truth and beauty…

Here’s a song I wrote that talks about how fragile our democracy is…
